Make the most of Welcome Week 2015

The wait is finally over. Welcome Week 2015 is here and, in just a week, the fall semester will commence.

Welcome Week activities begin on Wednesday, Sept. 2, and a full list of events and activities can be found on the official Welcome Week website. Here, we share just a small selection of the many ways that you can make the most of your first week on campus.

1. Settle into your new home-away-from-home

As you settle into your new Northeastern home, read these helpful guides to on-campus and off-campus housing to learn everything you need to know about the fall move-in process.

Did you forget to pack something? We have you covered with shuttle bus trips to Target, Best Buy, or Bed, Bath & Beyond at the South Bay Plaza. Check the Welcome Week schedule for shuttle bus departure times and locations. You can also find items to decorate your new digs at Northeastern’s Trash2Treasure sale on Sunday. The annual event, which offers gently used items for purchase, begins at 9 a.m. in the Curry Student Center Ballroom.

2. Receive a presidential welcome

President Joseph E. Aoun will officially welcome new students at the President’s Convocation at Matthews Arena on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 10 a.m. Following Convocation, walk over to Centennial Common for the “Taste of Boston” reception.

At 6:45 that evening, new students return to Matthews Arena to participate in the First Pages event in which author Alex Gilvarry will address the incoming class and host a discussion on his book From the Memoirs of a Non-Enemy Combatant.

3. Explore ways to get involved

The start of a new semester is the perfect time to join clubs and try out new activities on campus. On Sept. 7, during Fall Fest, you’ll have the chance to meet representatives from more than 250 student organizations. Visit the tent on Krentzman Quad to start exploring.

If you’re looking for job opportunities for the fall semester, stop by the Student Employment Job Fair on Sept. 9.

4. Make the campus your playground

It isn’t every day that a giant Slip ‘N Slide and bouncy house appear on campus, so be sure to get in on the action at Fall Fest ’15 on Sept. 7. Celebrate the start of the fall semester with this free festival featuring giveaways, music, and games.

Keep your eyes peeled for pick-up volleyball and wiffleball games taking place throughout the week. Yard games will be set up on Centennial Common and the Freshman Quad, too.

5. Get connected on social media

Be in-the-know by connecting with Northeastern’s social media channels. On Twitter, @Northeastern delivers daily university news and updates on campus life; @GoNUathletics is the source for all Northeastern sports updates; and other handles like @434CSC, @NUDining, @NUStudentLife, and @NUOrientation keep you in the loop on campus conversations in your first weeks.

You’ll want to follow @Northeastern on Instagram, too. (We particularly liked this fun shout-out from student Emily Vecchi, AMD’17.)

Use #NUWelcomeWeek on your Twitter and Instagram posts to join in the Welcome Week conversation, and download the Welcome Week 2015 mobile app.

As a reminder, this list represents just a glimpse of the many Welcome Week events occurring across campus. Be sure to visit the Welcome Week website for the latest information and schedule updates as you plan a week of campus fun.
