From high-profile speakers and athletic events to career conferences and Relay for Life, here are some of the can’t-miss events happening on campus this month.

The innovation behind Swatch watch, Netflix

Northeastern this month will host two Profiles in Innovation Presidential Speaker Series events, which bring the world’s most creative minds to campus for conversations on innovation and entrepreneurship.

On Tuesday, March 3, Swatch watch co-inventor Elmar Mock will discuss his breakthrough product, which rescued the Swiss watch industry and stands as one of the world’s most iconic brands. The event will begin at noon in the Raytheon Amphitheater.

On Thursday, March 5, Northeastern will welcome Carlos Gomez-Uribe, vice president of product innovation at Netflix. He will discuss how Netflix works to improve its product, specifically through its “recommended for you” feature. This event, also in the Raytheon Amphitheater, starts at 4:30 p.m.

Playoffs for men’s hockey team; Red Sox for baseball team

Men’s hockey kicks off the Hockey East playoffs on Friday, March 6, when it hosts Merrimack College in a best-of-three series. All of the games will be at Matthews Arena. The puck will drop at 7 p.m. on Friday, 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, and, if necessary, 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 8.

The men’s baseball season is already underway, and the Huskies will play their annual game against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, March 3 in Fort Myers, Florida. Northeastern’s first home game at Friedman Diamond is set for Tuesday, March 24, at 3 p.m. against Boston College.

Define American: An Evening with Jose Antonio Vargas

Jose Antonio Vargas, a journalist, filmmaker, and immigration activist, will give a talk on Thursday, March 19, at 6 p.m. in West Village F. Vargas is the founder of Define American, a campaign that works to elevate the immigration conversation.

His appearance is part of the University Scholars Seminar on Leadership, Research, and Innovation.

Confronting Guantanamo exhibit

This exhibit, which is part of a series of university-wide events that confront the history and legacy of Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, will examine the nature of place, the reality of the refugee experience, the ethics of public health, the implications of indefinite incarceration, and the scope of human justice.

The exhibit will be on display in the lobby of International Village from Thursday, March 19, to Saturday, April 25. An opening celebration will be held March 19 at 6:30 p.m. in International Village. On Wednesday, March 18, at noon in 240 Dockser, Jameel Jaffer, deputy legal director of the ACLU and director of its human rights program, will give the 22nd Valerie Gordon Memorial Lecture, in which he will discuss how the United States’ treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo will influence its global image for years to come. Relay for Life

Northeastern’s annual overnight fundraising walk starts at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 20, at Matthews Arena and concludes on the following Saturday at 6 a.m. All fundraising benefits the American Cancer Society. Reach (OUT) LGBTQ Career Conference

This “mini-conference,” on Saturday, March 21, will bring students together with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning industry professionals to discuss the realities of the workplace and key strategies for success. Panelists represent a wide berth of industries including social work, finance, academia, and nonprofit management.

The post-Ferguson road map to justice panel discussion

The Northeastern School of Law will host a distinguished panel of experts on Tuesday, March 24, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. to discuss laws and polices to put in place following a grand jury’s decision last year not to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson for killing Michael Brown. The event was originally scheduled for February but was postponed due to weather.

Xhibition Kitchen cooking demo

Food writer and blogger Sasha Martin will be at Xhibition Kitchen on Wednesday, March 25, from noon to 1 p.m. to dish up a free cooking demo and to discuss her memoir, Life From Scratch, which was influenced by her goal to eat a meal in every country over a 195-week period.
