January’s can’t-miss campus events

Here are just some of the events taking place at Northeastern this month that you should make sure to put on your calendar.

Winter Involvement Fair

This gathering of Northeastern student organizations is set for Tuesday, Jan. 13 from 5-7 p.m. in the Curry Student Center. It’s an opportunity for students to explore the different ways they can get involved on campus and for the organizations to recruit new members.

A Tribute to the Dream

The Northeastern community will honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “A Tribute to the Dream,” to be held on Thursday, Jan. 15, will begin at noon in the Curry Student Center Ballroom.

The program will include remarks from President Joseph E. Aoun, a keynote address by award-winning film director and producer Yoruba Richen titled “The New Black: The Intersection of Race, LGBTQ Rights, and the Fight for Equality,” and a performance by the Unity Gospel Choir.

The university will screen Richen’s documentary a day before the event, on Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. in room 105 of the Behrakis Health Science Center.

Petrochemical America

Gallery 360 will host “Petrochemical America” from Jan. 15 through March 15. Presented by the Center for the Arts, the exhibit will showcase the industrialized landscape of the Mississippi River Corridor, which stretches from Baton Rouge to New Orleans.

A collaboration between photographer Richard Misrach and landscape architect Kate Orff, the focus of the exhibit is “Cancer Alley,” a portion of the corridor known for its unusually high reports of cancer and other diseases.

In conjunction with the exhibit, the Center for the Arts will host a micro-conference titled “Grounds for Engagement: design, landscape and environmental health” on Monday, Jan. 26, from noon to 4 p.m. in the McLeod Suites.

Dance Marathon

The Northeastern University Dance Marathon is a 12-hour philanthropic event to benefit patients at Boston Children’s Hospital. Set for Saturday, Jan. 17 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the Curry Student Center ballroom, the event will include food, music, games, performances, and children’s stories.

The fundraising goal is $20,000 and students can register as individuals or with a team. To register, or donate because you can’t make the event, click here.

January volunteer fair

Students will have the chance to learn more about local volunteer opportunities on Thursday, Jan. 22 from noon to 3 p.m. in the Curry Student Center Indoor Quad, where some 50 local nonprofit organizations will be looking to recruit.

Holocaust Awareness Week

This commemorative and educational series provides the Northeastern community a chance to reflect on the Holocaust’s legacy in the 21st century.

Presented by the College of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Northeastern Humanities Center with the Holocaust Awareness Committee, the theme of this year’s series is “The Impact of the Holocaust on the Next Generation.”

The series will begin Tuesday, Jan. 27, with the 23rd annual Robert Salomon Morton Lecture in the Alumni Center from 5:30-7 p.m. Helen Epstein, the daughter of a Holocaust survivor and author of Children of the Holocaust and Where She Came From: A Daughter’s Search for Her Mother’s History, will be the keynote speaker.

The Philip N. Backstrom, Jr. Survivor Lecture Series will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 28 from 4:30-6 p.m. in the Raytheon Amphitheater. Titled “Talking with Grandma,” the lecture will feature Irene Selig and her grandson Elijah Botkin, S’15, who will discuss Selig’s Holocaust experiences and this generation’s role in preserving family history.

Athletics

Northeastern’s winter sports teams will play a score of games this month, including women’s hockey, which will take on crosstown rival Boston University on Sunday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. at Matthews Arena, and men’s basketball, which will host league foe James Madison at Matthews on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. For a complete athletics schedule, visit the Northeastern Athletics website.
