Take 5: Can’t-miss campus events in October

Northeastern has a number of exciting and engaging events planned this month. Here are five, which range from Huskies hockey and the arts to Big Data research and Profiles in Innovation.

1. This week Northeastern welcomes new artist-in-residence Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, who in 2012 launched an anti-harassment public art campaign called “Stop Telling Women to Smile.” Events include interdisciplinary dialogues, two wheat-pasting expeditions with students, and a block party on Tuesday, Oct. 7 from 2-5 p.m. on Centennial Common. Here is our preview of Fazlalizadeh’s residency, which is sponsored by the Center for the Arts and Northeastern’s new Public Arts Initiative.

2. The men’s and women’s hockey teams officially open the 2014-15 regular season this month. The men’s team kicks things off when it welcomes Hockey East rival Vermont to Matthews Arena on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. The women’s team’s first regular season game is an away tilt against Syracuse on Oct. 10. The team will play the home opener on Tuesday, Oct. 28, against the Boston University Terriers. Look for our season previews of both teams in news@Northeastern later this week.

3. On Tuesday, Oct. 21, Boston Dynamics founder Marc Raibert, E’73, will star in the latest installment of the Profiles in Innovation Presidential Speaker Series. Raibert will be speaking about dynamic robots and participate in a Q-and-A. Hosted by President Joseph E. Aoun, the speaker series is designed to bring the world’s most creative minds to campus for conversations on innovation and entrepreneurship.

4. It wouldn’t be October at Northeastern without Northeastern Dining’s annual Great Pumpkin Carving Contest. The 14th installment of this popular event is set for Thursday, Oct. 23, from 3-8 p.m. at Levine Marketplace. Students who want to participate must sign up by Oct. 19 for a chance to snag one of the 50 spots. The carved pumpkins will be displayed in Xhibition Kitchen in the following days, and members of the Northeastern community will vote for their favorites on Facebook and Twitter.

5. Northeastern’s sixth Pop Up Open Lab Experience & Reception will take place on Monday, Oct. 27, from 4-6 p.m. at Snell Library’s Digital Media Commons. Sponsored by the Office of the Provost, the Pop Up Open Lab will feature interactive demos and give students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to learn more about Big Data research being conducted at Northeastern across many disciplines.
