Northeastern’s annual Homecoming is underway, with a full weekend of events scheduled between today and Saturday.

This year, the spotlight is on Northeastern athletics, with four varsity hockey games and the start of the varsity basketball season scheduled, said the student Homecoming co-chairs, fourth-year students Will Pett and Corinne Iannitto.

“We’re trying to expand Husky Nation as far as possible,” Iannitto said. “With alumni coming back, we want everyone to be involved and show our husky pride.”

“That’s really our goal,” Pett continued. “We want to show our colors and celebrate who we are ask Huskies.”

Tonight, comedians Sarah Silverman and Nick Swardson will perform stand-up in Matthews Arena. Tickets for the show, sponsored by Homecoming, the Student Alumni Association and the Council for University Programming, are available online through myNEU or at the Northeastern box office.

On Friday at 7 p.m., the women’s hockey team will face off against Union College at Matthews Arena. At 8:30 p.m., Solomon Court in the Cabot Physical Education Center will host Midnight Madness, which will feature giveaways, competitions among members of both the men’s and women’s basketball squads, and the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen and the Mayor of Huntington Avenue.

On Saturday at noon, attendees can sample the food at the free cookout on the Library Quad; at 3 p.m., the women’s hockey team takes the ice against the RPI Engineers. Students and alumni 21 and older can attend the Husky Fanfest at 5 p.m. outside Matthews Arena — tickets are free and can be picked up from Student Affairs at 104 Ell Hall — ahead of the 7 p.m. men’s hockey game against the Boston College Eagles.

“At such a busy time of the year, with midterms this week and next, we think Homecoming is full of opportunities for students to take a break and get involved on campus,” Pett said.

On Monday, 60 students took part in a Homecoming community service event, with another 100 participating in a team trivia competition. On Tuesday, candidates for Mayor of Huntington and Homecoming Court were presented at Blackman Auditorium; voting for those honors runs through 11:59 p.m. tonight.

Wednesday was Red & Black Day, with students and alumni on campus and around the globe encouraged to show off their husky spirit by wearing Northeastern school colors. Student groups also decorated wooden huskies in the Curry Student Center while mingling with candidates for mayor, king and queen.
