WeekendWatch: Top spots for the tastiest burgers

There are few better summer foods than a tasty, juicy burger served fresh off the grill with the perfect array of fixings. Here are some of our favorite places in Boston and beyond.

Boston Burger Co. http://bostonburgerco.com/
37 Davis Square, Somerville
This Davis Square destination was opened in 2008 by three local restaurateurs who aimed to make some of the best burgers in the nation. And it’s safe to say they succeeded. In addition to their tasty 8-ounce burgers, Boston Burger Co. boasts a wide selection of flavored fries and eight kinds of boneless wings.

Mr. Bartleys’s http://www.mrbartley.com/
1246 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge
In business since 1960, this Harvard Square institution names its burgers after icons and newsmakers. Two of the most recent additions to the menu: The “Whitey” Bulger burger, a 7-ounce patty with bacon, barbecue sauce and jalapeno-pineapple relish; and the FBI burger, which is the same as the Bulger but with a fried egg — a not-so-subtle nod to the notion held by some locals that federal investigators have egg on their face in the handling of the long-sought fugitive’s case.

Charley’s http://www.charleys-restaurant.com/
284 Newbury St., Boston
For a burger stacked high with nearly any topping you could imagine, go no further than Charley’s, located not far from Northeastern on Newbury Street. Burgers come with hand-cut fries, which are nearly as mouth-watering as the main course.

Five Guys http://www.fiveguys.com/home.aspx
Locations in Medford, Saugus, Dedham, Stoneham and Foxborough
The menu is simple: Burgers, fries, hot dogs. No chicken fingers, milkshakes or — shudder — salads. But what the menu lacks in diversity it makes up for in excellence; this chain is widely hailed as one of the country’s best burger spots. Find a friend with a car and make your way to the suburbs, though you might want to skip breakfast before making the trip.

West End Johnnie’s http://www.westendjohnnies.com/
138 Portland St., Boston
Just around the corner from the TD Garden in Boston’s West End neighborhood, this restaurant draws inspiration from the African American, Irish, Jewish, Italian and Eastern European residents who have lived in the area. The house burger — an 8-ounce patty with applewood bacon, glazed onions and fontina — is among the restaurant’s most popular entrees.
