Today, Northeastern University will celebrate the accomplishments of the class of 2009 during the school’s 107th commencement. More than 2,700 undergraduates will receive degrees in the presence of thousands of family members and friends at TD Banknorth Garden. The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m.

Kenneth Cole, chairman and chief creative officer of Kenneth Cole Productions, Inc. and champion of social causes, such as AIDS research and homelessness, will deliver the keynote address. He will also receive an honorary Doctor of Public Service.

Northeastern will also recognize Barry Shrage, president of Combined Jewish Philanthropies, and Molly Corbett Broad, president of the American Council on Education, with honorary degrees. Shrage will receive a Doctor of Humane Letters and Broad, a Doctor of Letters, during the morning ceremony.

Dr. Gary Gottlieb, president of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and president-elect of Partners HealthCare, will speak at the afternoon commencement, which is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Matthews Arena. Nearly 1,700 students from the graduate schools, the School of Technological Entrepreneurship and the College of Professional Studies will receive degrees at the afternoon ceremony.

Dr. Gottlieb, one of three honorary degree recipients in the afternoon, will receive a Doctor of Science. Angela Menino, First Lady of the City of Boston, will receive a Doctor of Public Service, and J. Keith Motley, chancellor of the University of Massachusetts, Boston, will receive a Doctor of Humane Letters.
