Health Careers Academy at Northeastern Ranked in Top 10 Percent of American High Schoolsby U.S. News & World Report

The Health Careers Academy (HCa), housed on Northeastern University’s Boston campus, was recognized as a top high school by U.S. News & World Report in their 2009 America’s Best High Schools rankings. More than 21,000 public high schools in 48 states were evaluated this year, and as a bronze medal award winner, HCa is ranked in the top 10% of American high schools.

HCa, a Horace Mann Charter School in the Boston Public School system, is a college preparatory high school in Boston for students in grades 9-12 who are interested in exploring careers in the health professions. Founded in 1996 by health professionals working to diversify the health workplace, HCa graduates 100% of its students each year, and 95% of those graduates go on to pursue a college degree. More than 80% of the students at HCa are from a diversed background.

Northeastern’s partnership with HCa includes hosting approximately 200 students in campus classrooms, libraries and laboratories and providing them with support during their high school careers. Northeastern alumni, primarily graduates of the School of Education, make up 70% of the staff at HCa.

“We are truly blessed to be located on Northeastern’s campus as we prepare our students for college,” said Dr. Caren Walker Gregory, Headmaster of HCa. “We look forward to providing our students with the skills to become productive and positive members of society.”

The 2009 U.S.News & world Report methodology is based on the principles that “a great high school must serve all its students well, not just those who are bound for college and that it must be able to produce measurable academic outcomes to show that the school is successfully educating its student body across a range of performance indicators.”
