Local Community Invited to All-Day Event to Receive Healthcare Information, Flu Shots and Donate Blood on Wednesday, October 22

WHAT: Northeastern University will host the second annual Bouvé Health Fair and Flu Clinic to provide students and local community members with health-related services and information on healthy living and to raise cancer and disease awareness. In addition to free flu shots offered by the University Health and Counseling Services and the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC), the day’s events include free bone density and cholesterol tests and blood pressure screenings, a chance to ask questions about medications and a blood drive hosted by Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Flu shots will be given by 60 senior nursing students in the Vulnerable Populations class under the supervision of Nursing and Pharmacy faculty members.

Joining Northeastern for the event are several professional organizations, including the BPHC, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts and the American Pharmacist’s Association. The Melanoma Education Foundation will also be at the health fair and will educate students, parents and teachers on the dangers of skin cancer and the importance of skin safety and offer students a chance to try a facial sun damage analyzer.

Additional services provided to students and community members at the event include a smoking cessation clinic, HIV awareness and testing information, alcohol awareness, diabetes awareness, stroke awareness, oral cancer awareness, hearing tests and other useful services for those who want to increase their control over their health.

Student and University organizations participating in the event, in addition to its primary organizers Phi Delta Chi and the Bouvé College of Health Sciences, include Northeastern University Public Safety, the Student Governement Association, Rho Chi Pharmacy Honor Society, the University’s Urban Awareness Department, Northeastern’s chapter of Colleges against Cancer, Lambda Kappa Sigma, the Student National Pharmaceutical Association, University Health and Counseling Services at Northeastern, the Biochemistry club and the Student Nurses Association.

Phi Delta Chi is a Professional Pharmacy Fraternity. Its mission is to further the profession of pharmacy and its allied health sciences.
