Northeastern University Hosts Boston Public School Students to Debate Kosovo Situation

United Nations Association of Greater Boston holds Third Annual Global Classrooms: Boston Model United Nations Conference

Who: Boston public schools Model United Nations teams, Ambassador Walter Carrington, United Nations Association of Greater Boston, and the Northeastern Model UN Team.

What: 150 Boston public school students will devise solutions to the current situation in Kosovo as they role-play UN ambassadors. The students will participate in a simulation of five UN committees, discussing Kosovo’s recent independence, minority rights, the economic future of the region, preservation of cultural sites and the refugee situation. Students will negotiate these issues using research, writing, public-speaking and debating skills they have developed through class work and after-school activities with assistance from the UN Association’s education staff and college Model UN trainers, which includes students from Northeastern.

Six students will be honored as “Urban Diplomats,” moving on to represent Boston at a national Model UN Conference in New York. The UN Association of Greater Boston works with Northeastern University and other donors to provide this experience to students from economically disadvantaged schools through Global Classrooms. This program helps educate students about confronting global issues through the UN process.
