Northeastern University Sees Record Applicant Pool

University Applications Exceed 35,000; an Increase of 16 Percent

A testament to Northeastern’s burgeoning academic reputation and leadership in experiential education, more than 35,000 students have applied to Northeastern University for entrance this September, up 16 percent from last year.

“This tremendous increase in applicants is further evidence that our unique education model resonates with prospective students and families who are looking for an educational opportunity that will produce exceptional outcomes,” said Ronne P. Turner, dean of admissions and new student and family services.

Due in part to an expanded presence both nationally and overseas, Northeastern has seen a 16 percent increase in the applicant pool over last year and a 64 percent increase over the last five years. Turner noted that while a significant increase was expected, the actual numbers pleasantly surprised administrators.

“There are several factors that may have contributed to the unusual increase,” said Turner. “In addition to Northeastern’s signature co-op program, opportunities such as undergraduate research, global experiences and civic engagement have played a part in attracting students who wish to be better prepared at the time of graduation.”

Northeastern has seen a dramatic increase in applications received from Mid-Atlantic, West Coast and international students. The university has also seen a considerable surge in the number of African American and Hispanic applicants which have increased 143 percent and 52 percent over the last 10 years, respectively.

Admissions administrators point out that in addition to the expected shift in demographics, some additional efforts have had a role in the surge. These include expanding Northeastern’s regional presence, with 4 recruiters located in strategic recruiting centers throughout the U.S; alumni volunteers overseas; more strategic marketing and communication on the heels of the branding campaign launched in 2002; increase in target marketing; increased travel throughout the U.S. and abroad; 13% increase in visits (visiting more than 950 high schools this year); and effectively using alumni in outreach efforts through the Alumni Volunteer Program.

During the coming weeks, the admissions committee will meet to review applications and make decisions regarding the 111th entering class. Decisions will be announced on-line by April 1.
