WHAT:Northeastern University will host a lecture titled “HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis and STD Prevention in the United States: Current Challenges and Future Directions” by Dr. Kevin Fenton, Director of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the U.S. Centers for Disease Controls and Prevention (CDC). A Q&A session following Dr. Fenton’s presentation will be opened by Kevin Cranston, Director of the HIV/AIDS Bureau at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Douglas Brooks, Vice President of JRI Health Services, a non-profit human services agency helping underserved populations living with HIV/AIDS, and other disabilities.

WHO:Kevin Fenton, M.D., Ph.D., is Director of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He joined CDC in January 2005 as Chief of the National Syphilis Elimination Effort, leading a revitalization of this program to end the sustained transmission of syphilis in the United States.

Prior to his work at CDC, Dr. Fenton was the Director of the HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections Department in the United Kingdom’s Health Protection Agency (HPA). At the HPA, he established England’s national chlamydia screening program and led the development of the European Surveillance of Sexually Transmitted Infections (ESSTI) network, a 25-nation collaboration to enhance STD surveillance and prevention throughout Europe.

An author of numerous published journal articles, Dr. Fenton has served in a number of academic and community leadership positions, and has consistently focused on addressing racial and ethnic disparities in sexual health. Prior to arriving in the U.S., he was an advisor to a number of European Union governments and charitable organizations.

After graduating from the University of the West Indies Medical School in Jamaica in 1990, Dr. Fenton earned his Masters in Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1993. He earned his Ph.D. from University College London in 2005 with a thesis on race, ethnicity, and the epidemiology of STDs. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom.
