  • Northeastern sees a big boost in African American students’ graduation rate

    A new national report shows that Northeastern University has seen an increase of more than 27 percentage points in the graduation rate of African American students over the last decade.

    The data was issued by The Education Trust, a Washington-based nonprofit that works on closing achievement gaps for low income and minority families. Northeastern is highlighted in the report as one of a few universities nationwide that are making big strides in the graduation rates of minority students.

    In In 2011, Northeastern’s graduation rate for African Americans was 69.5 percent while, in 2002, the graduation rate was 42.1 percent, the report said. The graduation rate jumped more than 4 percentage points between 2010 and 2011, according to the findings.

    Arne Duncan, the U.S. Secretary of Education, last week acknowledged Northeastern’s graduation rates on Twitter.
