With a celebration of the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., a new art exhibit, and rivalries on the ice and the hardwood, it will be easy to get back into the swing of the spring semester this month.

Getting involved and getting settled

On Tuesday, Jan. 9, learn how to get involved this semester at the Winter Involvement Fair. The event—where representatives from many of Northeastern’s more than 400 student clubs and organizations set up shop to highlight their groups and engage potential newcomers—starts at 6 p.m. in the Curry Student Center indoor quad.

A Tribute to the Dream

Celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Tuesday, Jan. 16 with Northeastern’s annual event. “A Tribute to the Dream: Expressions of Race and Identity in Society” will start at noon on the 17th floor of East Village and feature a panel discussion that builds upon recent local and global discussions of race and society and a musical performance by students.

Panelists include Jonathan Kaufman, director of Northeastern’s School of Journalism; Akilah Johnson, a Boston Globe reporter who covers immigrant communities and the people behind city, state, and federal policies; and Clint Smith, a writer, poet and scholar. It will be moderated by Dan Lothian, former CNN Boston Bureau Chief and White House correspondent, and Northeastern journalism professor.

Artist talk and gallery exhibit

Artist Shantell Martin—known for her sprawling black-and-white drawings on everything from walls to skin to sneakers—will be on campus Wednesday, Jan. 10 to celebrate the opening of her new exhibit in Gallery 360. She’ll also share tips on a business model for artists at a talk that starts at 4 p.m. in the Studio Theatre.

Myra Kraft Open Classroom: Rule of Law

Throughout the spring semester, the weekly Myra Kraft Open Classroom series will explore the definition of the rule of law, what it requires, what happens in its absence, and how it has declined and emerged globally. Classes—held every Wednesday at 6 p.m. in 20 West Village F—will also explore some of the tensions between the rule of law and democratic governance, focusing on the rule of law in times of polarization and technological upheaval. The series kicks off on Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Resilience

There are plenty of opportunities this semester to explore how resilience touches our daily lives.

The first, on Tuesday, Jan. 16, is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Science Center Public Forums series. Join scientists at the Marine Science Center for a discussion on community resilience to climate hazards. The event starts at 7 p.m.

Then, on Tuesday, Jan. 23, join the Global Resilience Institute for the first event this semester in its Contemporary Issues in Security and Resilience Studies speaker series. Anthropologist and Northeastern faculty member Carie Little Hersh will explore “Rituals in Resilience” starting at 4:30 p.m. in 909 Renaissance Park.

Senior Career Conference

For seniors and December 2017 alumni, the Senior Career Conference on Friday, Jan. 19, is a great way to get a step up in the career search. The daylong event will feature an employer panel, employer-facilitated workshops, a networking lunch, and employer-in-residence sessions. Dress is business casual. Bring a resume if you would like it reviewed and have your NU ID ready to swipe in at the door. The conference starts at 10:30 a.m. in the Curry Student Center and Stearns Center. Register online.

Reach(OUT)

On Saturday, Jan. 20, check out the Reach(OUT) LGBTQA+ career conference, the first focused specifically on the perspectives and concerns of queer, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender non-conforming, non-binary, intersex, and asexual law students in preparation for co-op, internships, and professional life in law and legal-related fields. The conference starts at 10 a.m. in Dockser Hall. Register online for the event.
