July’s can’t-miss events

From yoga to film screenings, from a walkable Newbury Street to cybersecurity, there’s plenty to do and see on campus and nearby this month.

Engineering Wednesdays

This mini open house for prospective undergraduate engineering students and their families is an engineering-specific information session, followed by a tour of the College of Engineering that’s led by a current engineering student. It is an opportunity to learn about academic programs, co-op opportunities, support services, and the admissions process. The next one is Wednesday, July 5, at 11 a.m.

Cinema by the Sea

The Marine Science Center’s annual film screening series, Cinema by the Sea, continues this month with a showing of A Plastic Ocean on Tuesday, July 11 at 7 p.m. Films are screened in the Murphy Bunker at the Marine Science Center in Nahant, Massachusetts.

Conference on Security and Privacy in Wireless and Mobile Networks

The annual Conference on Security and Privacy in Wireless and Mobile Networks is dedicated to all aspects of security and privacy in wireless and mobile networks and their applications. This year it will start at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 18, in the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex.

Swim the Charles

The Charles River Conservancy’s annual City Splash event is part of a movement to reclaim urban river swimming in the Charles River. City Splash is a one-day state sanctioned community swim, held this year (its fifth year) on Tuesday, July 18, from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. To participate, meet at the Fiedler Dock on the Charles River Esplanade. Registration is required, along with a $10 fee.

Frog Pond Spray Pool

The Frog Pond Spray Pool is a Boston family favorite for city dwellers and visitors alike. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the beauty and history of the Boston Common. The spray pool is open through Sept. 4. Free Yoga at the Pond is also offered on Thursdays, from 6 to 7 p.m. through Aug. 31.

Open Newbury Street

Famed Newbury Street will become a pedestrian-only walkway over a series of three Sundays this summer. The first is July 23 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., when the street will be closed to vehicle traffic between Arlington Street and Massachusetts Avenue.
